EURO 2020/21 – Group stage betting

A total of 24 teams, split into six groups, are participating in this year’s tournament. Finland and Northern Macedonia, which have not yet started in any previous European Championships, will be this year’s “rookies”.

In addition to the first and second in each group, the four best third-place finishers will also qualify for the round of 16, which will begin on June 26 in Amsterdam.

Winner Group A – Let’s talk odds!

Italy, the team of head coach Roberto Mancini, and former champion of 1986, is considered to be top favorite in this group. Team captain Chiellini, center field organizer Marco Verratti or goal-getter Ciro Immobile are only a few of Italy’s key players. It is to mention that only four players are considered legionnaires.

Also the Turkish squad, just in time for the tournament, also showed an improvement in form and recently presented itself in a much better light. Legionnaires and recent champions in the French league Celik, Yazici and Yilmaz (OSC Lille) and are likely to be determined to continue on their winning streak, but also characters such as central defenders Söyüncü and Demiral, and of course Calhanoglu, Milan playmaker, should not be ignored.

Based on its odds, Switzerland is considered to be a candidate for promotion: The “Nati”, coached by Vladimir Petkovic since 2014, are entering the tournament with a strong midfield and key players like Zakaria, Xhaka, Freuler and Sow. The underdog in group A is likely to be Wales, who have to rely on their top star Gareth Bale, but otherwise do not seem to have much squad depth, in the midfield in particular.

Winner Group B – Let’s talk odds!

As quite expected, and despite the fact that the team is still waiting for their first title during a major tournament, top favorite in Group B is FIFA world ranking leader Belgium. The robust attacker Romelu Lukaku and ManCity creativity head Kevin De Bruyne, who ruptured his eye socket just shortly before the tournament and who likely won’t be involved in the beginning of the tournament, are known as the top stars of the Belgian eleven. Another asset of the Belgium team is its squad width, along with players such as the Hazard-Brothers, Tielemans, Castagne and Carrasco.

Another team that is to be kept an eye on for is Denmark. Along with its top-star Christian Eriksen, and other “veterans” like Kjaer, Delaney, Braithwaite or goalkeeper Schmeichel. Furthermore, the Danish squad that is being led by head coach Kasper Hjulmand, consists of driven talents especially in the offensive lineup.

Entitled to claim a spot for the round of 16 is Russia. The tactics of the Russians are strongly tailored to their captain and breakthrough striker Artem Dzyuba. Another important part in the squad of head coach Stanislav Cherchesov plays Monaco-legionnaire Aleksandr Golovin. However, when it comes to betting odds in terms of this tournament, you should keep in mind that the Russian team is probably not as well-positioned this year as they once were, especially on the defensive side.

Definite outsider in Group B in terms of betting odds is Finland, which is being led by head coach Markku Kanerva for almost 5 years so far. 31 years old Teemu Pukki, the key player on the Finnish team, who currently makes his money at the English club Norwich City, is attending the European Championship as a winner of the second division championship. Nevertheless, it can be noticed that, similar to the Russian squad, the team is lacking top star players especially when it comes to the team’s defense.

Winner Group C – Let’s talk odds!

In Group C, most betting shops clearly classify the Netherlands to be the top favorite team, which is coached by Frank de Boer. Worth mentioning is the Oranjes’ middle field, including player such as Frenkie de Jong, Gravenberch, Van de Beek and Wijnaldum, who play at an absolute world-class level. While key players like De Vrij and De Ligt provide a big presence on the central axis behind them, the Dutch take advantage in their offense due to being highly flexible. A lot is expected of Memphis Depay in particular, who can play virtually any position offensively this year.

The Ukraine represents a team of exceptional firepower, and is being coached by former superstar Andriy Shevchenko for the past five years. The Yellow-and-Blues rely on a very powerful midfield center, with Malinovskiy and wingback Zinchenko, who are supposed to come up with the right touch of creativity, right in front of the defensive midfielder Taras Stepanenko, with the goal to “feed” the Ukrainian strikers Tsygankov und Yaremchuk in the front.

In addition to that, the Austrian team represents a good mix of international top players, but still seems to have the need to work towards becoming a wholesome entity in the game. Tactically, Franco Foda’s team, which is rather defensive oriented. While often being questioned, their key players David Alaba or Marcel Sabitzer seem to not being able to fully deliver just yet like they usually do when playing for their individual clubs Munich and Leipzig. However, the two youngsters Baumgartner and Kalajdzic are expected to come up with interesting moves.

Lastly, the rookie team in this European Championship, Northern Macedonia, led by Igor Angelovski, is likely to be the main outsider in the betting world for the entire tournament this year. Nevertheless, the rookie team caught attention by surprisingly beating former top favorite Germany. Key player are Enes Bardhi and Eljif Elmas, but the „veteran“ and captain Goran Pandev (Genua FC) seems to be the actual star on the squad of the Northern Macedonian team.

Winner Group D – Let’s talk odds

The „Three Lions“, also known as the English national team, once again, seem to battle with their notorious “tournament curse”. The team has not been able to finish a tournament with a title since the year 1966, even though it is considered a favorite in the betting shops. The English team especially relies on its offensive top stars Kane, Sancho, Sterling, Rashford, Mount and Forden, but struggle on defense, perhaps because the devastating injury and hence absence of Liverpool-Star Trent Alexander-Arnold a week before the Euro 2020/21. Nevertheless, the Brits probably have the strongest squad of all participating teams overall.

The 2018 World cup finalist Croatia is not expected to be as strong as the squad was just three years ago. On the one hand, Croatia’s veterans Luka Modric or Ivan Perisic may be a little outdated by now, and on the other hand, the squad lacks the “big punch” up front, where striker Andrej Kramaric is expected to score big. The central defensive midfield, however, should remain promising, as Kovacic and Brozovic are asked to ensure proper organization.

The Czech squad, coached by Jaroslav Silhavy, are expected to enter the tournament with numerous interesting legionnaires like poster boy Tomas Soucek, key midfielder at the English club West Ham United. Adam Hlozek, 18 year old and forward at Czech First League club Sparta Prague, is regarded to be a mega-talent, will also be interesting to watch in the offense of the Czechs. Nevertheless, in a direct comparison with England and Croatia, the Czech team holds the role of an outsider.

This also applies to the odds of the Scottish team which, however enters the championship with players of excellence thanks to the English Premier League. Left-back Andy Robertson (FC Liverpool) is captain of the Scottish team, and McTorminay and McGinn will be responsible for pulling the strings in the midfield. Hopes are also pinned on 24-year-old Che Adams, who has not really arrived in the Scottish team yet, however.

Winner Group E – Let’s talk odds

Spain’s success of previous years including the win of the 2010 World Cup finals, as well as the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, appear to have come to an end. Lately, the “Furia Roja” disappointed rather than achieving titles like they used to, but perhaps because of the recent paradigm shift the team of Luis Enrique has undergone, the team has yet to find itself and form a unity. The Spanish team does not necessarily deal with a lack of quality as the compilation of stars including Ferran Torres, Álvaro Morata, Rodri, Pedri or Marcos Llorente are nevertheless expected to deliver top matches during the upcoming tournament, the Euro 2020/21. Another problem may be the defense of the Spainish team, due, beyond other things, to the absence of veteran Sergio Ramos.

EURO 2020 Odds – Winner Group E

Former top favorite Poland appears to completely rely on its record striker Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich), who just recently toppled Gerd Mullers almost ancient goal record.  Beyond that, however, the Polish squad lacks depth. Piotr Zielinski (Napoli) surely is of high importance in the midfield, and defence boss Bednarek (Southhampton) likewise enters the tournament with lots of essential experience. The offense, however, lately lacked creativity.

Sweden is expected to be unpredictable when it comes to betting advice. As former top star Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t attend this year’s tournament, the Swedish squad was forced to put all their hope into two promising youngsters on the team: Kulusevski (Juventus Turin) and Alexander Isak (Real Sociedad). Similar to the Polish squad, but also Sweden’s midfield is characterized by a low quality density. Thus, the Swedish, as well as the Polish squad should definitely be located behind Spain when it comes to betting odds.

In the betting shops, Slovakia is expected to be a clear outsider in this group E, and is known for its reliable and stable defense. Head coach Stefan Tarkovic has been coaching the squad for not even an entrire year, can certainly rely on experienced wingbacks, especially the defense boss Milan Skriniar. In addition, the six in the squad, Stanislav Lobotka, will play an important role in the Euro 2020/21.

Winner Group F – Let’s talk odds

France is entering the EURO 2020 as current World Cup title holder and will face an extraordinarily hard group to play, right at the beginning of the tournament. Nevertheless, it does not seem to scare “Les Bleus” as France has, along with Mbappé, Griezmann and Dembélé, the strongest offense in the entire tournament. Team head coach Deschamps has the freedom to fall back on Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté and thereby, build the best sixes in the world. France’s defense is very well equipped with players like Varane, Koundé or Pavard hochkarätig besetzt. The squad of “Les Bleus” is pretty much the same, as it was during the World Cup, three years ago.

Portugal is another team with a high quality density overall, but seems to not have found itself fully just yet. Star coach Fernando Santos can, once again, continue to fall back on veteran and superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who announced that it is likely to be his very last European Championship to participate in. His team members André Silva, Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes all managed to have terrific and extraordinary seasons with their home clubs. Portugal’s central defense, including Ruben Dias who is actively playing in the English Premier League, has been awarded with the title for the player of the season.

Former top favorite Germany, who will enter the tournament for one last time with head coach Joachim Löw on its sidelines. By the end of the EURO 2020, Löw announced to end his head coach career for the German national team after 15 years and along with one title (World Cup Winner in 2014). Once Löw steps down from the head coach position, Assistant Coach Hansi Flick will follow, who just recently finished his coaching duties at the German top club, Bayern Munich. Germans’s squad consists of eight players from the record club Bayern Munich, like players such as Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. After a quick break from the national team, Thomas Müller is ready to return to the main squad. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who will enter the tournament with the confidence of Champions-Leage-win.  Whether the quality of the Germans against France and Portugal is sufficient for corresponding EM tips, however, remains to be seen.

Clear outsider in group F is the Hungarian national eleven, coached by Marco Rossi. As Dominik Szoboszlai, top star on the Hungarian team, will miss out on the tournament due to an injury, all the hopes of the team is being put on other Germans legionnaires like Orban and Sallai. However, considering the overwhelming and powerful competition during this tournament, every point gained can be seen as a great success for the Hungarian team.
