England coach Gareth Southgate wants the title
The English team has a fantastic squad with no weak points and a good mix of veterans and emerging talents. However, those who expect explosive attacking football from the Three Lions could be disappointed, as coach Southgate made it clear in an interview how his team will approach this tournament.
The coach noticed that he had exceptional players in his offense line-up who needed to be staged as often as possible, but emphasized how important the defensive organization would be. He noted that France and Portugal won their recent titles not with spectacular attacking football, but with an excellent balance between defense and offense.

Two systems in the queue
In order to be able to guarantee the necessary defensive protection in the important games, Southgate wants to play a 3-4-3 system in games against teams on an equal level. A 4-3-3 system is preferred against weaker teams.

Between veterans and emerging talents
England has a balanced squad and, unlike some other nations, such as co-favorites Belgium, can look proudly on a large number of young talents who will have a strong impact on the English selection in the coming years.
Anyone who has players like the two Dortmund prodigies Jude Bellingham (17) and Jadon Sancho (21), Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka (19) and the two Champions League finalists Mason Mount (22) and City’s Phil Foden (21) in the squad doesn’t have to worry about the future of the national team.
Another very important player is 22-year-old defensive midfielder Declan Rice, who currently still plays for West Ham United, but is being hunted by Manchester United and Chelsea, among others.
If anybody wants to sign Declan Rice, he should bring more than 100 million pounds to the negotiating table.
In addition to the young talents, the English also have players with a lot of experience, such as central defender Harry Maguire or star striker Harry Kane, who is our biggest favorite for the title of top scorer.
Oversupply in two positions
Even after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury, there is an oversupply of right-backs in the squad. Kieran Trippier has just won the Spanish league title with Atlético, Kyle Walker (Manchester City) and Reece James (Chelsea) can play both as right-back and right-center defender in the back three. The selection for Southgate in the position of the left winger will be even more difficult, where with Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish four absolutely exciting wingers could play, with Foden likely coming over the right wing.
Old and new faces
Croatia’s successful coach Zlatko Dalić didn’t change too much in the system, but will have some players on the starting line-up who didn’t play a (major) role in the last World Cup. The personnel changes were due to some resignations from the Croatian national team. Instead of goalkeeper Danijel Subasic, Dinamo Zagreb goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic will start and Rangers full-back Borna Barisic will replace Ivan Strinic on the left side of defense.

While there are numerous options for Ivan Rakitic in midfield, the departure of Mario Mandzukic is much more difficult. Andrej Kramaric from Hoffenheim and Dinamo Zagreb center forward Bruno Petkovic are the two alternatives, but Mandzukic cannot be replaced one-on-one. One possibility would be to send a 4-3-1-2 onto the field instead of the 4-2-3-1 system, in which Kramaric acts alongside Perisic, who otherwise plays on the wing.
Lots of options in the central midfield
The 4-3-1-2 system would also make it possible to set up another central midfielder, which would certainly accommodate the squad structure. In addition to the boss on the field, Luka Modric, who can still do a lot of leg work despite his 35 years, Inter’s star player Marcelo Brozovic will be a first team regular.
The experienced Milan Badelj would also be an alternative for the position in defensive midfield. Also in the attacking midfield are three very good players Dalic can choose from: Mario Pašalić (Atalanta Bergamo), Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea FC) and Nikola Vlašić (CSKA Moscow). With a 4-3-1-2 system, the Croatians would have to give up their usual wing play, so turning away from the traditional 4-2-3-1 also has major disadvantages.

Betting tip – England wins against Croatia
There is good reason to believe that England will win the game against Croatia. While the Croatians are still working on the right system and some of the personnel questions have not been answered, the English are very confident in both the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3.
While the Croatian national team has probably gotten a bit weaker in terms of personnel since the sensational World Cup final in 2018 due to the resignations of key players, the Three Lions have had numerous young talents who have already caused sensations at their respective clubs. Last but not least, Southgate’s team can rely on their home advantage, which is why we favor a 3-way bet on a win for the English.
