The spirit of Gijon hovers over the Ukraine-Austria match as both teams would most likely be in the next round with a tie. Let’s look at the requirements before this game.
Austria without a chance against the Netherlands
After the mandatory win against North Macedonia, the fans of the Austrian national team were hoping for a surprise against the Netherlands. However, in order to survive against an opponent of this stength, everything has to go well. The players have to act at their best, the coach must work out a suitable match plan and a little luck in the course of the game should also be present.
Unfortunately, none of these points applied to the 2-0 defeat to the Dutch. Some players remained below their possibilities, coach Franco Foda could not find any concepts for the offensive game for his team and the ÖFB-Eleven fell behind early after the VAR intervened to get a penalty after a foul by David Alaba on the edge of the penalty area.

Gregoritsch the wrong striker choice
It was also clear that the suspended Marko Arnautovic was missed a lot by Austria. Franco Foda’s plan on the offense seems to be to bring on Marko Arnautovic against Ukraine, depending on his fitness level, or to bring the Chinese Super League player from the start and rely on his individual qualities in the offense.
Without Arnautovic, the national team would lack danger, especially since Michael Gregoritsch’s line-up had to be questioned. The striker was confident after his strike against North Macedonia but was not the right choice for the game against the Netherlands. Gregoritsch is strong when he is fed with crosses from the wing and can sneak in front of his opponents.

Due to the high quality difference between the two teams, however, these possibilities were largely absent. A counter-attacker would have been the better choice to at least have the chance to surprise the Dutch with a quick switch after winning one or the other ball.
Another useful alternative would have been an attacker who tirelessly works at least for his team, such as Rapidler Ercan Kara, who was not considered for the EM squad.
Frenkie De Jong outstanding
The class difference between the two teams was particularly visible in one personnel. Coach Frank De Boer announced during the week that his key player De Jong should get the ball as often as possible and dictate the pace in the game against Austria. So it happened and the Barca midfielder was by far the best man on the pitch and shaped the game. Apparently effortlessly, he passed the Austrian players with the ball at his feet and always found a way out, even in tight situations.
De Jong is often a little underestimated as he rarely contributes scorer points for his team. At Ajax he played a somewhat more offensive role in midfield, at the Catalans he has the field in front of him and acts as a clock with incredible precision. De Jong had a pass rate of 92.6 percent over the entire season.

It was clear that the Austrians lacked a player of this quality and in the end they could thank the Dutch that the defeat was not higher due to a sloppy evaluation of their chances.
Ukraine does compulsory exercise with stomach ache
Like the Austrian national team, Ukraine also celebrated a victory against North Macedonia, with captain Yarmolenko and center forward Yaremchuk taking the lead in the 2-1 win. Alioski scored the next goal after a penalty kick and the underdog was about to equalize, but it should no longer succeed. The Ukrainians could have won even higher in the end, but Ruslan Malinovskiy failed from the penalty spot.

Betting tip – a draw helps both teams
Before the last match day, Ukraine and Austria are tied for second and third place respectively behind the Dutch, who have already won the group. The Ukrainians have the same goal difference as Austria, but scored more goals and would be runners-up in the group if they shared points. A draw would, however, in all probability be enough for the Austrians, as four points should be enough for promotion to the knockout stage as one of the best third in the group.
It is now getting particularly strange, because it could be that a draw for the Austrian team would even be better than a victory. As runners-up in Group C, Franco Foda’s team would meet Italy, the team that acted extremely confidently on the first two match days of this tournament and not conceded a single goal in the last ten competitive games (!).
As third, Austria would either compete against the group leader in Group E or the winner in Group F. While the teams from Group F, especially France, would also be a very difficult lot, the winner of Group E would be a bit more pleasant, as the Spaniards are currently not acting as consistently as the Italians. In addition, it has not yet been said that Spain will emerge as group winners and with a lot of luck you could meet the Swedes or Slovaks and then have an approximately equal opponent in front of their chest.
We don’t think both teams will play for a draw from the start, but the longer the game goes on, the more likely it will be that the teams will settle for points. The initial situation speaks in favor of dividing points, which is why we recommend a 3-way bet and tip X.
