In Ligue 1, France’s top division, 20 clubs compete against each other and play for the title of French champion in 38 rounds. French championships have existed since the end of the 19th century, but only the titles won since 1932 have been officially recognized. At that time, Division 1 – also known as the Premiére Division – was established, and later converted to Ligue 1 in 2002.

The French top team Paris Saint-Germain is a relatively young club that was founded in August 1970. The club from the capital celebrated its first successes in the 1980s, in which it won two cups and one championship. At that time, however, numerous other clubs in France were still superior to PSG. Paris Saint-Germain later became really dominant with the entry of the Qatar investors group Qatar Sports Investments, which has invested a lot of money since the takeover of the club in 2011 in order to be able to act at the same level like big international clubs.

Stars such as Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di María were transferred to the French capital for horrendous transfer fees and by now it is already very rare that another club in the championship can break the dominance of the Parisians. Between the 2012-13 and 2018-19 seasons, the club and its supporters celebrated six championship victories. Only in the 2020/21 season was this series sensationally interrupted by LOSC Lille, before PSG became French champions again the following season.

Due to the extremely high individual class, the Parisians became a true goal machine in the French league. It happens regularly that the club can collect more than 100 goals in the final league table, so when betting on PSG over bets as well as handicap picks are generally recommended. Even if the championship has been decided ahead of time, the team regularly ensures top wins. The example of Paris Saint-Germain shows that the saying “money does not score goals” is not always correct.

Olympique Marseille is one of the most successful traditional clubs in France and has so far given its loyal fans ten championship titles and just as many cup wins. The club had its most successful time in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it won four championships in a row and beat AC Milan 1-0 in the 1993 Champions League final.

These successes also had to do a lot with the controversial OM President Bernard Tapie, who brought numerous well-known footballers such as Jean-Pierre Papin, Rudi Völler, Didier Deschamps, Marcel Desailly and Eric Cantona to the club, investing lots of money. Both President Tapie and Olympique Marseille, however, ran into major financial difficulties. The president filed for bankruptcy, Olympique Marseille relegated to the second division and faced economic ruin from which the club had a difficult recovery for a few years. The fans had to wait a long time for the next championship victory, which was somewhat surprising in the 2012-13 season.

Olympique Marseille is one of the most exciting clubs in France and looks back on dazzling personalities and a turbulent club history that has experienced all ups and downs. The club always found its way back into the right lane, even in difficult phases in which their survival stood on shaky legs, and is loudly supported by extremely frenetic fans in the stands of the Stade Vélodrome. Marseille is usually much stronger in front of a home crowd than abroad, which should not be neglected when betting.

The fans of Olympique Lyon, founded in 1950, had to wait until 2002 for the first championship title in the club’s history, but after that they were spoiled for a long time. Between 2002 and 2008, the club won seven league titles in a row, setting a new Ligue 1 record. During this time, some very well-known players were in the Les Gones squad, such as Karim Benzema, Sidney Govou, Eric Abidal, Hatem Ben Arfa and the Brazilian internationals Juninho, Fred, Sonny Anderson and Caçapa. Juninho in particular is still on everyone’s lips with his absolute dream free kicks and is considered one of the greatest specialists for free-kicks and set pieces ever. The most goals for the club were scored by Fleury Di Nallo, who scored 182 times between 1960 and 1974.

The greatest international success came in the 2009-10 season when the club advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they had no chance against Bayern Munich and were eliminated with a total score of 0-4 after two legs. Since the beginning of 2016, the club has played their home games at the Groupama Stadium, which was formerly known as the Stade des Lumières (2011–2016) and the Parc Olympique Lyonnais (2016-2017). Almost 60,000 spectators can now watch Olympique Lyon’s home games.

Betting Tipps Monaco

AS Monaco has experienced extremely turbulent times in recent years. In the 2016-17 season, the Monegasque unexpectedly won their eighth championship title ahead of top team Paris Saint-Germain. The attacking duo, consisting of the young Kylian Mbappé and the experienced Radamel Falcao, proved to be the perfect mix, and the club was eight points ahead of the Parisians after matchday 38. This was followed by a runner-up title in the following season and a tough relegation battle in the 2018-19 season, which almost ended with the move to Ligue 2 and the dismissal of title-winning coach Leonardo Jardim.

AS Monaco has a decisive advantage over the other league competitors because the club is subject to Monegasque tax law and therefore has to pay much lower taxes on their player’s wages. The other clubs regularly fight this competitive advantage in court and even a solidarity payment from AS Monaco in the amount of 50 million euros could not finally settle this conflict.

Numerous well-known footballers were active at the club from Monaco, whereby extremely prominent names can be found especially in the offense. Thierry Henry, Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappé all scored numerous goals for AS Monaco. Other well-known former players include Fabinho, Yannick Carrasco, Tiemoué Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva, Wissam Ben Yedder and Benjamin Mendy.

The encounter between Olympique Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain is described as the “Clásico” of France by many football fans and the media. After all, the two most populous cities in France meet and so do the two clubs, which also had the highest budgets in football for a long time. The club’s supporter groups fought heated duels in and around the stadiums until the mid-2000s, with rivalry between supporters becoming a little lower in recent years, as Paris Saint-Germain has simply become financially superior by far. When the two teams meet, many goals are almost always guaranteed, so over-betting is rarely a bad choice. Due to the great superiority of Paris, 3-way betting on PSG is often a good choice – both home and away!

The French television channel Canal+ called the duel between the two Olympique teams based on El Clásico the “Olympico”. There have been numerous spectacular matches between the two teams, such as the 7-0 win at Marseille in 1991 or the 8-0 revenge from Lyon six years later. Also unforgettable is the 5-5 draw from 2009, which is still considered one of the best games ever played on French soil. The eternal record of the Choc des Olympiques is very balanced and it is no coincidence that in February 2020 both teams scored exactly the same number of goals in the matches against each other (175). There is a healthy rivalry between the clubs and their supporters, which rarely turns into hate.

The 5-5 in ‘Olympico” is one of the most spectacular games ever in French football

FC Nantes – AS Saint-Etienne: Betting on the former top teams

In the duel between FC Nantes and AS Saint-Étienne, two teams meet which in the past played a key role in French football. The two teams were particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s and dominated the French championship at the time. Saint-Étienne won ten championship titles between 1957 and 1981 and Nantes won the league eight times since 1965.

At that time there was no bigger game in France and the encounter was interesting because the two teams had a completely different style of play. AS Saint-Étienne was established in a working-class town and has always valued physical strength and willingness to run. In the past, the style of play was often referred to as traditionally “English” – wide balls forward should find Saint-Étiennes fast strikers and other target players. FC Nantes took a different path. Technical finesse and elegant football with a bigger focus on possession have always had priority here and fans still expect this style of play from their club.

Nowadays, this game is rarely about silverware, but true French football lovers appreciate the tradition of this encounter.

Information about the French Ligue 1

Here you can find more information about Ligue 1, the top division in France. What are the peculiarities of French football, what extraordinary records did teams and players set in Ligue 1?

Stadiums in Ligue 1

  • Most fans fit in the Olympique Marseille venue, which seats 67,394 spectators. The Stade Vélodrome was opened in 1937 and rebuilt for the 2016 European Championship. It is currently called Orange Vélodrome due to a name sponsorship.
  • 59,186 fans fit in the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. The venue, which opened in 2012, is currently called Groupama Stadium
  • The Stade Pierre Mauroy of Lille OSC ranks third and can accommodate more than 50,000 fans
  • 49,691 fans fit into the Parc des Princes, where numerous world stars enter the pitch at home games of Paris Saint-Germain.

There are no championship games in France’s largest stadium, but the national team plays numerous home games at the Stade de France, which has a capacity of 81,338 spectators.

The most successful clubs

Paris Saint-Germain has caught up strongly in recent years and it surely doesn’t take long before the capital club will be at the top of the eternal title-winners list. AS Saint-Étienne is still leading the eternal title table together with Olympique Marseille, but the working-class club of Saint-Étienne celebrated the last championship title in the 1980-81 season, while the league victory was celebrated in Marseille in 2009-10 for the last time.

Current balance of power

Since the entry of Qatar investors, there is no way around Paris Saint-Germain if you want to win any title in France. The financial difference between PSG and the rest of the league is mostly reflected in the table. It is very rare that another club can interrupt their dominance for a season and in most cases the championship is already decided a few rounds before the season ends.

Since the 2012/13 season, only AS Monaco in the 2016/17 season and Lille in the 2020/21 season have been able to overthrow the Parisians. Olympique Lyon also had a long series of championship titles between 2001-02 and 2007-08. In the five seasons between 2007-08 and 2012-13, with Olympique Lyon, Girondins Bordeaux, OSC Lille, HSC Montpellier and Paris Saint-Germain five different teams were champions. This variety of serious title candidates no longer exists today due to the dominance of Paris.

Record players of Ligue 1

The player with the most appearances in Ligue 1 is former goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau, who played a total of 618 championship games for Nantes, PSG, Lille and Bastia between 1996 and 2014. In second place comes Jean-Luc Ettori, a goalkeeper who can confidently be described as a very loyal player. The goalkeeper completed all his 602 championship games for AS Monaco, where he wore the jersey with Number One between 1975 and 1994. Dominique Dropsy (596), Dominique Baratelli (593) and Alain Giresse (586) follow in the next places.

Top goal scorers of Ligue 1

There are hardly any players among the best scorers who are well-known by young people nowadays. The top 10 players on this list all scored their goals in previous eras. This is due to the fact that in the recent past the best attackers did not stay in France for too long and, like Thierry Henry, moved to the English Premier League, for example. First place in Ligue 1’s top scoring list is Delio Onnis, who scored a total of 299 goals in 449 games for AS Monaco, Reims, Tours and Toulon. Bernard Lacombe scored a total of 255 goals for Lyon, Saint-Étienne and Bordeaux. Third place went to Hervé Revelli, who scored 216 times for Saint-Étienne and OGC Nice between 1965 and 1978.

More interesting statistics about Ligue 1

Girondins Bordeaux, AS Saint-Étienne and Monaco managed to win the title immediately after being promoted from the second league.

For the highest win you have to look back to the 1935-36 season when FC Sochaux won 12-1 against Valenciennes. The defense of Paris Saint-Germain in the 2015-16 season would not have received so many goals in one game, because Thiago Silva and Co. had to concede only 19 goals over the entire season.

FC Nantes achieved almost the same in the 1994-95 season, what the “Invincibles” of Arsenal FC could accomplish in English Premier League. In contrast to Arsene Wenger’s team, Nantes suffered one defeat over a whole season, but 32 games without a defeat are definitely worth mentioning.

The two former Saint-Étienne players Jean-Michel Larqué and Hervé Revelli celebrated seven championship titles, as did the then Lyon players Juninho, Grégory Coupet and Sidney Govou. Former Marseille legionnaire Josip Skoblar scored the most goals in one season. The Yugoslav center forward scored 44 goals in the 1970-71 season and narrowly prevailed against Saint-Étienne striker Salif Keita in this season, who scored just two goals less.

No one can dispute a record for the Austrian Karl Klima – the left wing born in 1908 in the service of Olympique Antibes scored the first goal in French professional football on September 11, 1932.
