With its first edition in 1898, the Italian Serie A is one of the oldest leagues in Europe. In 1930 the league was re-established and exists in the same setup since then. In football-crazy Italy there are numerous large clubs but still a relatively poorly developed infrastructure with old stadiums, which on the one hand give the league an romantic old school character, but on the other hand are also problematic for the further development of the league. Unlike many other major leagues, there are seven teams in Italy that have won domestic league titles seven or more times. Record champion is Juventus Turin with 35 titles won. But “Juve” was also one of the main protagonists in one of the biggest betting and match fixing scandal in 2015, which became known as Calciopoli, because of which Juventus was forced into Serie B and lost two championship titles.
Juventus – Betting on The Old Lady
Betting Tipps Juventus
From 2011 to 2019, the “Old Lady” from Turin was Italian champion eight times in a row – a series that no other club in Italy could build up. The history of Juventus is inextricably linked to the history of the Agnelli family and even today, with Andrea Agnelli, a member of the family clan is still president of the club. Juventus is the largest and domestically most successful club of Italy and not only because of the new Allianz Stadium in terms of infrastructure the best positioned club in Italy.
Juventus has always been a team that defines itself through a good balance between defense and offense, which also explains why club legends can be found in all positions. For example, Gianluigi Buffon played over 650 games for Juve and center-back Giorgio Chiellini already holds a record of over 500 games. On the other hand, there were also brilliant attacking players like Zinedine Zidane, who got big (and bald) in Turin, and striker stars like Alessandro del Piero, David Trezeguet or Roberto Baggio. So the “Old Lady” can do it either way – on the one hand, they have won the championship in the last few years with just 20 goals conceded and based on a tough defense, on the other hand Juventus have been champions with 86 goals scored playing dynamic and powerful attacking football. When betting on Juventus Turin, it pays to study the current team and the daily form of the most important protagonists, but also the tactical attitude of the current coach (18 of the last 19 Juve coaches were Italians).
AC Milan – Betting on the Rossoneri
Betting Tipps AC Milan
AC Milan is 18-times Italian champion and one of the figureheads of Italian football. The Red and Blacks from San Siro dominated the 1950s and 1990s and are the most successful Italian club on international stage: Milan won the Champions League seven times, most recently in 2007. In recent years, the club has searching for its identity, because while in the successful eighties and nineties players like Maldini, Baresi and Costacurta – the epitome of Italian Catenaccio – shaped the team, in recent years Milan has always been susceptible to avoidable defeats. Nevertheless, Milan is still good for an “under” tip today. Especially in home games in recent years.
Inter – Betting on the Nerazzurri
Betting Tipps Inter Milan
The very best times of the Interisti are some time ago. Especially in the 1960s, when Inter won the European Champion Cup twice – the predecessor of the Champions League – they were celebrated as “Grande Inter”. In addition, they won five championships and the UEFA Champions League between 2006 and 2010. Inter legend Giuseppe Meazza was the namesake for today’s stadium of the two Milan clubs. With Lothar Matthäus and Ronaldo, two inter-players were twice named World Footballer of the Year. Compared to the big local rival AC Milan, which currently won as many championship titles as Inter, there is traditionally a little more spectacle and more straightforward attacking football to be seen among the Black and Blue. Even in difficult times, Inter’s games see more goals then those of AC Milan.
AS Roma – Betting on the Giallorossi
Betting Tipps AS Roma
With fourteen runner-up titles, but only three national Scudetti (the Italian championship title is called Scudetto), AS Roma is something like the eternal second. The last Serie A title dates back in 2001, which led to a huge championship celebration of the famous-enthusiastic Roman fan scene in the Circus Maximus. At international level, however, Roma have not yet won anything. The greatest Roma legend is definitely Francesco Totti, who played an incredible 786 competitive matches for the capital club between 1992 and 2017. He was also the symbol for the game philosophy of the Romans, which stands for quick and direct attacking football. Less than 60 Roma goals scored in one season are a rarity – in 2016-17 the wolves even scored 90 goals. Games with AS Roma participation are traditionally very entertaining.
Lazio – Betting on Le Aquile
Betting Tipps Lazio Roma
The big rival of AS Roma is Lazio, which is known as Biancocelesti or Le Aquile, meaning “The Eagles”. Just like in Milan, the two Roman clubs share one stadium and play in the Stadio Olimpico of the Italian capital. Lazio has won two championships so far, most recently in 2000 and, like AS Roma, is historically relatively unsuccessful for a capital club. Two of the greatest legends of the Laziali were the attackers Silvio Piola in the 30s and 40s, and Giuseppe Signori in the 90s. Unlike the northern Italian clubs, attack is the motto of Lazio. Similar to AS Roma, Lazio is a quite entertaining team to watch and “over” picks are recommended.
SSC Napoli – Betting on the Azzurri
Betting Tipps Napoli
The light blue from Naples are the biggest and most popular club of the Italian south and were specially shaped by one person: Diego Maradona achieved god status in Naples in the 80s, led the Neapolitans to two championship titles, an UEFA Cup victory and is still adored in Campania today. SSC Napoli is also known for the tremendous atmosphere in the Stadio San Paolo, which is home of the Napoli Ultras. Slovakian Marek Hamsik, who even beat Diego Maradona’s old goal record by six goals, is record player of the southern Italians. The new record scorer of the club is Belgian striker Dries Mertens. The Neapolitans traditionally stand for creative and dynamic football with a focus on the offense and thus also differ in their stylistic means from the northern Italian clubs.
AC Fiorentina – Betting on the violets from Florence
Betting Tipps Fiorentina
The Violets from the Tuscan capital of Florence have so far won two championships and over the years the “Viola” has also established itself in the Serie A elite. Between 2006 and 2015 the AC Fiorentina ended Serie A seasons as fourth six times and also caused one or two exclamation marks in Europe. The European Cup Winners’ Cup was brought to Florence in 1961 and stayed in the tournament several times over winter in the European Cup in modern times. The Fiorentina traditionally shows a good balance between defense and offense, with top players like Luca Toni and Gabriel Batistuta, but also had the most stable defense in the league. The club holds the Serie A goal record because they scored 95 goals in 34 games in the 1958-59 season. And also today the “ACF” provides spectacles in many games.
Big games in Italian Serie A
The Italian Serie A is best known for its heated derbies. These can be city duels, but also regional duels that mobilize numerous people and involve a lot of heat.
Juventus – Inter Milan: betting on the Derby d’Italia
- 15.05.21 Juve Inter
- 17.01.21 Inter Juve
- 08.03.20 Juve Inter
- 06.10.19 Inter Juve
- 27.04.19 Inter Juve
- 07.12.18 Juve Inter
- 29.04.18 Inter Juve
- 09.12.17 Juve Inter
Betting Tipps Juve - Inter
The Derby d’Italia is considered the most important game of Italian club football, especially since two regular title contenders from the north meet here. When Juventus and Inter meet on the field, this usually means not an open exchange of blows with numerous goal area scenes, but a fight for every meter. Neither team wants to lose this game, and for many years the qualitative gap has never been such that one team could completely dominate the other. At the end of the 1990s there was a phase of six derbies, in which only four goals were scored: twice they separated without a goal, four times the respective home team won 1-0. This is a trend that has been confirmed for a long time when these two teams meet and real spectacles are very rare in the Derby d’Italia.
AC Milan – Inter Milan: betting on the Milan derby
- 21.02.21 Milan Inter
- 17.10.20 Inter Milan
- 09.02.20 Inter Milan
- 21.09.19 Milan Inter
- 17.03.19 Milan Inter
- 21.10.18 Inter Milan
- 04.04.18 Milan Inter
- 15.10.17 Inter Milan
Betting Tipps Milan - Inter
Milan is the only city in the world that is home to two Champions League winners. The Derby della Madonnina, as the Milan derby is called in Italy, is correspondingly hot. The two teams not only share the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, also known as San Siro, but are historically almost equally successful at national level. The derby balance between the two major Milan clubs is extremely balanced, with the goal difference separating the two teams only by a few goals. Both historically and in the recent past, the duel between Milan and Inter is not one in which a lot of goals are scored. Since the beginning of the derby, there have been an average of three per game, but this is somewhat falsified by high-scoring games in the early days of football. There is no such stalemate as with Juventus against Inter here, but an “under” is on average more likely to be considered here than an “over”.
AS Roma – Lazio: Betting on the Roman derby
- 15.05.21 Roma Lazio
- 15.01.21 Lazio Roma
- 26.01.20 Roma Lazio
- 01.09.19 Lazio Roma
- 02.03.19 Lazio Roma
- 29.09.18 Roma Lazio
- 15.04.18 Lazio Roma
- 18.11.17 Roma Lazio
Betting Tipps Roma - Lazio
The Derby della Capitale, meaning ‘the capital derby’, is mainly characterized by two special features: on the one hand there are significantly more draws than in other derbies of this type, on the other hand there are numerous expulsions. The encounter between AS Roma and Lazio is a true question of faith in many ways, such as political and sociological, and the waves go correspondingly high when the two teams duel in the Olympic Stadium of Rome. Unlike the Milan derby, the Roman derby was seen as poor in the distant past and has recently become more classy and spectacular. AS Roma has a relatively clear lead in the overall balance. In this derby, it pays off to count cards and speculate live on possible upcoming expulsions.
Juventus – Torino FC: Betting on the Torino derby
- 03.04.21 Torino Juve
- 05.12.20 Juve Torino
- 04.07.20 Juve Torino
- 02.11.19 Torino Juve
- 03.05.19 Juve Torino
- 15.12.18 Torino Juve
- 18.02.18 Torino Juve
- 23.09.17 Juve Torino
Betting Tipps Juve - Torino
From a sporting point of view, the Torino Derby or Derby della Mole is usually not as explosive as the Derby d’Italia, but it still has everything that makes a derby. Juventus has become the country’s most popular club over the years, while Torino FC has a very large following, especially in the greater Torino area. In addition, the smaller Torino club, which has won seven championships, is a working class club, while Juventus gradually represents the upper class of the country. There are also striking differences of belief in the political attitudes of the two fan camps. From a sporting point of view, the Torino Derby is a game in which many goals are scored, which is also due to the class difference between the two clubs. Depending on the constitution of the two clubs from Piedmont, more “over” bets should be considered here.
Sampdoria Genoa – Genoa FC: betting on the Derby della Lanterna
- 03.03.21 Genoa Sampdoria
- 01.11.20 Sampdoria Genoa
- 22.07.20 Sampdoria Genoa
- 14.12.19 Genoa Sampdoria
- 14.04.19 Sampdoria Genoa
- 25.11.18 Genoa Sampdoria
- 07.04.18 Sampdoria Genoa
- 04.11.17 Genoa Sampdoria
Betting Tipps Sampdoria - Genoa
One of the oldest and most traditional derbies in Italy is the meeting of the two clubs from Genoa. Sampdoria has its sympathizers more in the outskirts of the city and the Genoese environment, while FC Genoa is a classic city club. Even if FC Genoa won nine championship titles and Sampdoria only one, “Samp” has developed into a local hero in recent years. The traditional derby has not yet been played a hundred times because the teams often did not play in the same division, but then as now it was a very low-scoring derby with an average of well under 2.5 goals per game. So even in Genoa you can confidently try to speculate on a few highlights or try your luck with live betting.
SSC Napoli – AS Roma: betting on the Derby del Sole
- 21.03.21 Roma Napoli
- 29.11.20 Napoli Roma
- 05.07.20 Napoli Roma
- 02.11.19 Roma Napoli
- 31.03.19 Roma Napoli
- 28.10.18 Napoli Roma
- 03.03.18 Napoli Roma
- 14.10.17 Roma Napoli
Betting Tipps Napoli - Roma
The encounter between Napoli and AS Roma is known as the Derby del Sole. Derby of the South is also a name for the duel between the two most popular football clubs outside of Northern Italy. Overall, the games of these two teams are fairly balanced, but AS Roma has a small statistical lead. With a share of almost a third, draws in particular are very common in this game. It is also striking that in this difficult-to-predict derby hardly any run of results that’s built up, the winning streak is quickly broken again. SSC Napoli achieved the longest series in the history of Derby del Sole with 14 unbeaten games in a row between 1975 and 1982.
Bologna – Fiorentina: betting on the Derby dell’Appennino
- 02.05.21 Bologna Fiorentina
- 03.01.21 Fiorentina Bologna
- 29.07.20 Fiorentina Bologna
- 06.01.20 Bologna Fiorentina
- 14.04.19 Fiorentina Bologna
- 25.11.18 Bologna Fiorentina
- 04.02.18 Bologna Fiorentina
- 16.09.17 Fiorentina Bologna
Betting Tipps Bologna - Fiorentina
The Apennine derby between Bologna and AC Fiorentina got its name because the Apennines separate the two cities. Although the two cities are just under 100 kilometers apart, you have to expect an hour and a half by car. The historically very balanced derby has been played over 140 times and is considered a duel in which, on average, few goals are scored. Since the late 1950s, neither team has scored more than three goals in a single direct duel.
Serie A – one of Europe’s most important leagues
In addition to the top leagues in Spain, England and Germany, the Italian Serie A is one of the four best and most important leagues in Europe. Due to the regular international success, the league is practically consistently in the top four of the UEFA coefficient ranking. A big difference to Germany and England is the lack of infrastructure, which is more comparable to Spain. In addition, the Italian league is more prone to scandals and financial difficulties of individual clubs compared to the other top leagues.
Stadiums in Serie A
Due to high entrance fees, old stadiums and security problems at numerous venues, games in Italian Serie A are only rarely visited. The league average has always been between 20,000 and 25,000 spectators. Most spectators traditionally come to the two Milan clubs to the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, which can accommodate almost 80,000 spectators. In terms of capacity, the Olympic Stadium in Rome follows with 72,000 spectators, followed by the San Paolo in Naples with around 60,000 seats. In comparison, the new Juventus stadium, the Allianz Stadium, only holds 41,500 fans. To improve the infrastructure in the country, new stadiums for AS Roma, Lazio Roma, Fiorentina, Palermo and Cagliari are currently in the planning phase.
The most successful clubs
A total of 16 clubs have already won at least one Italian championship. Juventus Turin are clear record champions with 36 championship titles, with the Old Lady being stripped of two more titles due to the Calciopoli scandal. In addition to the 36 championships, Juventus finished second another 23 times. The club’s first pursuers are the two major Milan clubs, followed by the traditional FC Genoa, which won all of its nine titles between 1898 and 1924.
18 AC Milan
9 FC Genoa
7 FC Torino
3 AS Roma
2 SSC Napoli
1 Cagliari Calcio
Current balance of power
Italy’s Serie A is all about the supremacy of Juventus. The series champion is the financially strongest and most stable team in the league and is alternately – and usually with a respectful distance – pursued by the other four to five traditional major clubs. Recently, the SSC Napoli has emerged as the first persecutor, while the Romans and Milanese clubs weakened in phases, but are now becoming stronger and more constant. Before Juventus started its impressive Scudetto series, the league was in the hands of Inter Milan for a long time. Such series champions appearances are not uncommon in Serie A.
Serie A record players
The record player in the Italian league is goalkeeper legend Gianluigi Buffon, who was able to outpace previous record holder Paolo Maldini by a few games in his forties. With Francesco Totti from AS Roma and the Argentine Inter-legend Javier Zanetti there are two other players in modern football who have made over 600 appearances in Italian Serie A. Formerly Juventus goalkeeper Dino Zoff was the record holder for almost 25 years – the 112-time Italian goalkeeper was kicked from the throne in the 2000s.
The best scorers in Serie A
It is hard to imagine that the record of the old player legend Silvio Piola could be broken by any player in the near future. Francesco Totti was close with his 250 Serie A goals, but then he couldn’t break Piola’s mark of 274 goals. Third is the Swedish AC Milan legend Gunnar Nordahl, followed by the great Giuseppe Meazza and the Brazilian Mazzola, who also played for AC Milan. In places 6 to 10 there are other club legends with Alessandro del Piero, Giuseppe Signori and the former Udinese star Antonio di Natale.
