In football-crazy Italy there are numerous large clubs but still a relatively poorly developed infrastructure with old stadiums, which on the one hand give the league an romantic old school character, but on the other hand are also problematic for the further development of the league.
Unlike many other major leagues, there are seven teams in Italy that have won domestic league titles seven or more times. Record champion is Juventus Turin with 36 titles won.
But “Juve” was also one of the main protagonists in one of the biggest betting and match fixing scandal in 2015, which became known as Calciopoli, because of which Juventus was forced into Serie B and lost two championship titles.

The big rival of AS Roma is Lazio, which is known as Biancocelesti or Le Aquile, meaning “The Eagles”. Just like in Milan, the two Roman clubs share one stadium and play in the Stadio Olimpico of the Italian capital. Lazio has won two championships so far, most recently in 2000 and, like AS Roma, is historically relatively unsuccessful for a capital club. The Derby d’Italia is considered the most important game of Italian club football, especially since two regular title contenders from the north meet here. The encounter between Napoli and AS Roma is known as the Derby del Sole. Derby of the South is also a name for the duel between the two most popular football clubs outside of Northern Italy. The Apennine derby between Bologna and AC Fiorentina got its name because the Apennines separate the two cities. Although the two cities are just under 100 kilometers apart, you have to expect an hour and a half by car. The historically very balanced derby has been played over 140 times and is considered a duel in which, on average, few goals are scored. Since the late 1950s, neither team has scored more than three goals in a single direct duel.

In addition to the top leagues in Spain, England and Germany, the Italian Serie A is one of the four best and most important leagues in Europe. Due to the regular international success, the league is practically consistently in the top four of the UEFA coefficient ranking. A big difference to Germany and England is the lack of infrastructure, which is more comparable to Spain. In addition, the Italian league is more prone to scandals and financial difficulties of individual clubs compared to the other top leagues.
Stadiums in Serie A
Due to high entrance fees, old stadiums and security problems at numerous venues, games in Italian Serie A are only rarely visited. The league average has always been between 20,000 and 25,000 spectators. Most spectators traditionally come to the two Milan clubs to the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, which can accommodate almost 80,000 spectators. In terms of capacity, the Olympic Stadium in Rome follows with 72,000 spectators, followed by the San Paolo in Naples with around 60,000 seats. In comparison, the new Juventus stadium, the Allianz Stadium, only holds 41,500 fans. To improve the infrastructure in the country, new stadiums for AS Roma, Lazio Roma, Fiorentina, Palermo and Cagliari are currently in the planning phase.
The most successful clubs
A total of 16 clubs have already won at least one Italian championship. Juventus Turin are clear record champions with 36 championship titles, with the Old Lady being stripped of two more titles due to the Calciopoli scandal. In addition to the 36 championships, Juventus finished second another 23 times. The club’s first pursuers are the two major Milan clubs, followed by the traditional FC Genoa, which won all of its nine titles between 1898 and 1924.

ItUntil a few years ago, Italy’s Serie A was all about the dominance of Juventus Turin. The series champion is the financially strongest and most stable team in the league and is alternately – and usually with a respectful distance – pursued by the other four to five traditional major clubs. Before Juventus started its impressive Scudetto series, the league was in the hands of Inter Milan for a long time. Such series champions appearances are not uncommon in Serie A. Since 2020, however, Serie A has started to become more balanced again and the Milan clubs in particular have shown great performance in recent years. Inter Milan clinched the Scudetto in 2021, AC Milan a year later. The times of the “easy” Juve titles seem to be over for now.
Serie A record players
The record player in the Italian league is goalkeeper legend Gianluigi Buffon, who was able to outpace previous record holder Paolo Maldini by a few games in his forties. With Francesco Totti from AS Roma and the Argentine Inter-legend Javier Zanetti there are two other players in modern football who have made over 600 appearances in Italian Serie A. Formerly Juventus goalkeeper Dino Zoff was the record holder for almost 25 years – the 112-time Italian goalkeeper was kicked from the throne in the 2000s.
The best scorers in Serie A
It is hard to imagine that the record of the old player legend Silvio Piola could be broken by any player in the near future. Francesco Totti was close with his 250 Serie A goals, but then he couldn’t break Piola’s mark of 274 goals. Third is the Swedish AC Milan legend Gunnar Nordahl, followed by the great Giuseppe Meazza and the Brazilian Mazzola, who also played for AC Milan. In places 6 to 10 there are other club legends with Alessandro del Piero, Giuseppe Signori and the former Udinese star Antonio di Natale.
