Most bookmakers still don’t know exactly how to rate the US national team. In recent months and years, so many different players have been called up for the “Men’s National Team” that it is still unclear which players will actually appear in Qatar.

Argentina to win World Cup 2022 | 151 | 106 | 150 |
At our bookmaker test winner Bet365 the odds for a World Cup win for the United States are @151.00, but of course it is obvious that winning the World Cup is practically impossible for the Americans.
However, it will be more exciting to see how far the USA will go in the course of the tournament. Since the home World Cup in 1994, the Americans have qualified for the round of 16 three times. At the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea, they were only beaten by Germany in the quarterfinals.
At first glance, it doesn’t seem unlikely that the USA will make it through the group stage, even though they didn’t take part in Russia 2018. However, the road to the final is long and rocky and thus practically as unlikely as the World Cup title. Nevertheless, the odds are significantly lower than for winning the entire tournament.
In Group B, the USA have one supposedly superior opponent in the first place. England are considered by all sports betting sites to be the firm World Cup favorites in the group. Iran, however, are even bigger underdogs than the USA in Group B.
The United States will specifically be battling it out with Wales for a spot in the round of 16. However, in three games anything is possible and if the U.S. boys manage to upset England in their second group game, they could even pull off a sensation and win the group!

22Bet offers sports betting with high stakes and win limits. In addition, the betting company has a wide range of bets available. Customers who play with higher stakes and do not want to compromise on the betting selection will find 22Bet a great choice!
22bet Review Sign up with 22BET and get 122 € BonusIt has happened, of course, that a striker from an underdog team wins the Golden Boot, but in the case of the USA this is very unlikely, especially since the team does not have a classic target player up front. One of the most prolific goalscorers is, of course, Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, but big talents like Timothy Weah, Giovanni Reyna and Brenden Aaronson are also always capable of scoring.
The goals scored by the USA are usually distributed among several players, which is why a USA top goalscorer at the World Cup in Qatar would be a huge sensation, as you can see from the odds.
- Christian Pulisic to be World Cup top scorer @ 101.00 / Bet365
- Timothy Weah to be World Cup top scorer @ 126.00 / Bet365
- Giovanni Reyna to be World Cup top scorer @ 151.00 / Bet365

In general, the USA are not often properly challenged in this federation. Mexico and Canada, and to a lesser extent Costa Rica and Panama, are probably the most unpleasant opponents for the United States in CONCACAF. Against weak teams such as Grenada or other small states, the United States may celebrate big victories, but they do not improve the quality of their team.

When challenged by a somewhat stronger team in a major tournament the USMNT is often not up to the task. Time and again, they make avoidable slips, as was the case in the World Cup qualifiers with two 2-0 defeats in Canada and Costa Rica. So, it could well be that the lack of pressure in their own association could become a stumbling block for the Americans at a major global event.
After the United States performed quite successfully overall in the spring and summer, there was a bit of a crash in September. The two friendly matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia definitely did not go according to plan.
The 2-0 defeat against Japan, which has not been convincing of late, was fully deserved. Even more disappointing, however, was the 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, in which the US had more possession but were the weaker team overall. The hosts from the Arabian Peninsula had the better chances to win the game.

The U.S. didn’t seem to be perfectly rehearsed in their 4-3-3 formation and had problems finding solutions. Coach Gregg Berhalter will have to find a strong first eleven that harmonizes with each other on the pitch as he prepares for the tournament.
Fun fact: The US national team celebrated its highest victory in 2008 with an 8-0 win over Barbados. The national team’s highest defeat dates back 74 years – back then, the USA, which were anything but enthusiastic about football at the time, lost 11-0 to Norway.

USA World Cup 2022 squad
Gregg Berhalter’s team has some world-class talent in its ranks, but they still have a long way to go before they are truly well-established stars. With Christian Pulisic, they currently have only one talented player in their ranks who has proven his ability over a long period of time at absolute elite clubs. We analyze the well-balanced US team in detail.
USA goalkeepers
At the goalkeeper position, the USA could have a problem with match practice. Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper Matt Turnier is currently the number one goalkeeper for the USA, but it is impossible for him to get past Arsenal’s number one, Aaron Ramsdale. So, the United States will start the tournament with a talented goalkeeper, but one who is unlikely to play much until the World Cup finals in Qatar.
GK – Matt Turner (Arsenal FC)
GK – Sean Johnson (New York City FC)
GK – Ethan Horvath (Luton Town)

USA center backs
The USA have a wide range of talented players at centre-back, but a regular formation has not yet emerged under coach Berhalter.
An important factor for the Americans will be the leap in performance of Cameron Carter-Vickers, who is on the verge of becoming a key player at Scottish champions Celtic. The final line-up of the USA is still to be decided.
CB – Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic FC)
CB – Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)
CB – Tim Ream (Fulham)
CB – Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls)

USA full backs
In the first half of 2022, the USA featured footballers in the full-back positions who are unlikely to be in the starting line-up in Qatar. For the 2022 World Cup, however, it is likely that Barcelona’s Sergiño Dest and Fulham foreign player Antonee Robinson will occupy these positions, which would be a very strong constellation.
However, it is quite possible that coach Berhalter will also include other players in his considerations. The USA have some great talents at this position.
RB – Shaq Moore (Nashville SC)
RB – DeAndre Yedlin (Inter Miami CF)
RB – Sergiño Dest (FC Barcelona)
LB – Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach)
LB – Antonee Robinson (Fulham FC)

USA central midfield
The USA currently have a very exciting blend in the centre of midfield. The coach has many different types of players at his disposal, some of whom have tremendous potential. The biggest talents for these positions are certainly Giovanni Reyna and Brenden Aaronson, but the more defensive Tyler Adams has also attracted attention with his move to Leeds United.
For some time now, Weston McKennie has been the boss in the midfield. The Juventus foreign player is the most important player in the team. A central three-man midfield with, say, Adams, McKennie and Aaronson or Reyna could probably hurt any team in the world. But here, too, there is always the question of how well the Americans will settle in before the tournament and which of the national team stars will also be regulars at their clubs.
DM – Tyler Adams (Leeds United)
DM – Kellyn Acosta (Los Angeles FC)
CM – Weston McKennie (Juventus Turin)
CM – Yunus Musah (Valencia CF)
CM – Cristian Roldán (Seattle Sounders FC)
CM – Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo)
CAM – Brenden Aaronson (Leeds United)
CAM – Giovanni Reyna (Borussia Dortmund)

USA attack
Currently, it looks like the USA’s attack is a one-man show, consisting of Chelsea’s right winger Christian Pulisic. Although some other interesting players, such as Jordan Morris or Lille’s Timothy Weah, have already attracted attention, it has recently become apparent that they are having problems adapting to the national team and are not yet scoring goals.
So, while the USA’s midfield centre is well-staffed, the attack is still a bit of a worry, partly because the various types of players are considered rather predictable. One strong newcomer, however, could be Jordan Siebatcheu from Union Berlin, the top scorer in the Swiss Super League in 2022. We can possibly expect a pleasant surprise from him.
RW – Christian Pulisic (Chelsea FC)
LW – Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC)
ST – Timothy Weah (LOSC Lille)
ST – Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas)
ST – Haji Wright (Antalyaspor)
ST – Josh Sargent (Norwich City)

USA competition flair
When it comes to major events, the US boys usually impress with their great commitment and ability to push each other. At the World Cup, however, the great talent of the US-Americans will probably not be put to ideal use. Many of the regulars in the national team could only be substitutes at their clubs. Moreover, in the course of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, the US boys were hardly challenged by sometimes weak opponents.
The USA are participating in a group in which some of the opponents will play very cautiously. England will rely heavily on a disciplined defense, and the Welsh and Iran will also be more defense-oriented, so the U.S. will likely be forced to attack. Balancing this need to launch an attack with the necessary stability on the back line will be very difficult for an inexperienced team.

USA World Cup history
Back in 1930 in Uruguay, the USA was one of 13 nations to compete at the very first FIFA World Cup. At that time, football was not even worth a marginal note in the US sports-crazy nation, and yet the team finished third. Later, the USA also participated in the 1934 and 1950 tournaments.
From here on, a huge dry spell began and the USA did not qualify for any tournament for 40 years. It wasn’t until 1990 that the then rather ridiculed US boys took part again and were eliminated in the group stage.
However, 1994 changed everything as the World Cup was held on the North American continent – in the USA – for the first time. The Americans enjoyed a true football feast, even making it to the round of 16, and acceptance for the previously rather hated sport grew. Enthusiasm had now spread not only to women’s football but also to men’s football.
Between 1990 and 2014, the USA never missed a tournament and became a regular at World Cups. In 2002 in Japan and South Korea, they reached the quarter-finals, which was the biggest triumph ever achieved by a US men’s team at a World Cup. FIFA ranked the USA eighth in the World Cup after the tournament.
In 2018 in Russia, when the national team was in a state of flux and some of the talented players were not yet experienced enough, the USA failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 32 years. It was a big disappointment for the US public, who are now quite interested in football, but they are demanding a clear redemption in Qatar in 2022.
