Introduction

The Euro 2024 format
As with world championships, the number of participating teams increased again and again in the past. At the beginning, between 1960 and 1976, only four teams competed against each other. Since 2016, 24 national teams have been competing for the title.
The teams will compete in six groups of four. The top two will advance as usual and the four best third-placed teams will complete the 16 teams for the round of 16. After that, it’s the usual knockout system. Since the European Championship in 1984, by the way, there have been no matches for third place, which will also be the case at the European Championship in 2024. The final will take place on the 14th of July in Berlin’s Olympiastadion.
How to proceed in case of equal points in the group stage?
What happens if two or more teams in the group stage are level on points after the last matchday? The decisive factor is the number of points scored in the direct duels. If this is also the same, then the goal difference from the direct encounters counts. If the goal difference is the same, the number of goals scored is used.
Now it gets a little complicated. If three or four teams are equal on points and there are still two teams left after the above-mentioned steps, then the above-mentioned procedure is only applied to the two remaining teams. If there is still no decision then it goes on as follows:
- The goal difference from all group matches
- The higher number of goals scored from all group matches
Now here comes another special case:
If in the final round of the group stage two teams face each other with the same number of points and the same number of goals scored and conceded, and the score is level, the ranking is determined by a penalty shootout. However, this procedure is not applied if more than two teams have the same number of points.
Otherwise, the Fair Play ranking will be taken into consideration and finally the better position from the ranking of the European Championship qualification.
The groups of the 2024 European Championship
In addition to hosts Germany, 20 other teams have already been determined. Three spots are still up for grabs in the playoffs.
Group A: Group A features Germany, Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland. Germany are certainly the group favourites here, but it is a balanced group in which every team will have a chance of advancing.
Group B: Group B will be an exciting one, as Spain, Croatia and Italy are three teams that can be expected to do very well in this tournament. Albania were extremely unlucky in the draw, as the underdogs in Group B were drawn against extremely strong opponents and any points would be a success.
Group C: England are the clear favourites in Group C. The Three Lions will face Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia. On paper, the Danes are the biggest favourites to finish second.
Group D: This group features France, the Netherlands, Austria and the winner of play-off A. This means that either Poland, Wales, Estonia or Finland will join them in this challenging group. France are one of the biggest favourites for the tournament and are therefore the top contenders in Group D. The Netherlands have the best chance of finishing second, but Austria are a dangerous underdog, as you can see from our underdog tip for Euro 2024.
Group E: Alongside favourites Belgium, Group E features Slovakia and Romania. This group also includes the winner of Play-off B, who should have no complaints about the draw. Israel, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine have a chance of making it into this manageable group.
Group F: Portugal, the Czech Republic and Turkey have already been confirmed as participants in this group. The winner of play-off path C will join them. Greece are the favourites here, as Georgia, Luxembourg and Kazakhstan appear to be much weaker. Portugal are the clear favourites in this group and will also have a say in who wins the tournament.

Fans can look forward to beautiful and modern stadiums at the 2024 European Championship. 18 cities and stadiums originally submitted a bid, with Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Kaiserslautern and Dresden backing out.
Of the remaining 14 cities, the DFB Executive Committee finally selected ten, taking into account factors such as stadium capacity and existing infrastructure. The ten venues were announced on January 22, 2020.
Fun Fact: At the Euro 2024, the capacity of the stadiums will for the most part be lower than for everyday Bundesliga matches. For example, 81,365 spectators attend Bundesliga matches at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, while only 61,524 fans will be admitted to the stadium for the European Championship. England at European Championships
The English national team did not take part in the first two European Championships, finishing third on debut in 1968 with the legendary Sir Alf Ramsey. After failing to qualify for the competition in 1972 and 1976, they were eliminated at the 1980 European Championship in Italy after finishing third in their group. In 1984, the team failed to qualify against Denmark, and in the following two tournaments they were eliminated in the group stage.
In 1996, England achieved their first success worth mentioning when they lost at the European Championship on home soil only in the semifinals against the eventual winners Germany. England only lost on penalties after Gareth Southgate failed to beat Andreas Köpke. After being eliminated in the group stage at the 2000 European Championship, the Three Lions advanced to the quarter-finals four years later, where they again lost out to Portugal on penalties.
