Although Germany have only one point after two matches, they are in a good position before their last group match. If Spain beats Japan, then a win against Costa Rica will definitely be enough for the Germans to advance. In the event of a draw between Spain and Japan, Germany would have to beat Costa Rica by with at least a two-goal difference to be on the safe side. Only in the event of a sensational victory by Japan over Spain could things get really tight for the Germans. In that case, they would have to win by a landslide against Costa Rica.

FUNFACT: If Japan draw 1-1 against Spain and Germany win 1-0 against Costa Rica, Germany and Japan would have the same number of points and the exact same goal difference. In this case, Japan would advance to the round of the last 16 because they won the direct duel.

However, these are all numbers games that Germany does not want to dwell on for too long. A clear victory against Costa Rica is a must and it is also the only thing that Hansi Flick’s team can influence.

Of course, it is clear that Germany must bring its attacking power to the pitch and attack against the glaring underdog. However, one should not underestimate the fact that Costa Rica also still have a chance of advancing and will therefore have to try again and again to set up scoring opportunities.
