On the last matchday of Group E, Japan is looking to shake up the Spaniards after their win against Germany. But after the 1-0 loss to Costa Rica, only very few people believe that will happen.

We have a detailed preview of the clash between Japan and Spain and provide you with the best odds and the most exciting tips and insights.

Japan provided the second really big surprise of the tournament on the first match day: Just like Saudi Arabia against Argentina, the Japanese were able to turn a 1:0 disadvantage against Germany into a 2-1 win. However, they then suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Costa Rica.

Spain had thrashed Costa Rica 7-0 on matchday one, which was their highest win at the 2022 World Cup to date. Against Germany, however, the Spaniards showed weakness and only managed a 1-1 draw, which nevertheless puts the “Furia Roja” in a good position.

The match will take place at the Khalifa International Stadium in al-Rayyan on December 1 at 10 pm Qatar time.

Japan World Cup 2022 Preview

Japan celebrated a huge sensation in the first match against Germany and suddenly looked like a dark horse in group E. But shortly afterwards they suffered an avoidable 1-0 defeat against Costa Rica, which was the result of a weak midfield and a serious goalkeeping error.

The Blue Samurai are still in second place in the group table, but in all likelihood will still need a win against Spain to reach the round of the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup. A draw would only be enough for the Japanese if there is no winner in the parallel match between Costa Rica and Germany.

The Japanese messed up in the first half against Costa Rica…

The Japanese team manager Hajime Moriyasu had already rested some players against Costa Rica or left them on the bench. Now, however, he must send his best possible team onto the field. However, it will be very difficult to adopt the same approach as against Germany. The Spaniards are much more confident on the ball than the German team.

Spain World Cup 2022 Preview

In the first match against completely outmatched Costa Rican players, Spain was completely convincing and scored seven goals. Although they were technically the better team against Germany, they did not play well enough, especially in the attack. Time and again, the ball-loving Iberians got carried away and despite their great passing ability in midfield, they simply created too few scoring opportunities.

The current standings for Spain are nevertheless very comfortable. Even a draw is definitely enough for coach Luis Enrique’s team to advance. Even with a defeat against Japan, Spain’s promotion is very likely. This could only be prevented if Costa Rica defeats Germany or if the Germans overcome the eight-goal gap on the Spaniards with a win. So, from a practical point of view, Spain’s promotion is already as good as settled.

Team comparison

In favor of Japan:

+ A giant has already been defeated in the shape of Germany
+ Team boss Moriyasu can call on one or two rested top players.
+ In the event of a draw, Japan would still have a small opportunity to get help in the parallel match – so the cirumstances could change several times during the game.

In favor of Spain:

+ Incredibly pass-proof midfield
+ Flexible attacking line-up in which every player is a threat
+ Comfortable starting position in Group E
+ Japan must win and must therefore take some risks.

The last duel

Japan have only met Spain once in football history: In 2001, the Japanese tested against the 2010 world champions in Córdoba and lost 1-0. The goal for the Spaniards, who at that time still featured Pep Guardiola, Gaizka Mendieta and Raúl, was scored by defender Rubén Baraja in injury time.

Japan – Spain Over Under Prediction

Japan almost certainly must win the game. That does not mean, however, that the Japanese can attack from the first minute on. They will be much more eager to keep the game quiet.

Spain, on the other hand, can take a relaxed approach and will probably be looking to control the midfield and play an energetic, short passing game. So at first glance, there is nothing suggesting a game with a lot of goals here. We are betting on an “Under 2.5”, i.e. a maximum of two goals scored per game.

Japan – Spain Prediction

Japan sensationally beat Germany, because they took advantage of a period of lack of concentration in the German defense, which was not equipped with world-class players anyway. The Spaniards will probably not give away such gifts to the underdogs and the difference in individual class is even greater than between Japan and Germany.

We expect a clear victory for the Spaniards, who will hardly give the Japanese any opportunities.

Japan – Spain Correct Score Bet

Spain will have the ball a lot and for long periods and tire the Japanese with their short passing game. At the right time, the Iberians will finally strike. The Spanish are unpredictable: Their three attacking players as well as their two attacking central midfielders are always capable of scoring. This will probably be too difficult for the Japanese to defend in the long run.

Our Japan Spain result tip is therefore a 2-0 win for the favorites, who could also secure first place in Group E.
