Saudi Arabia World Cup 2022 Preview

Saudi Arabia have certainly been one of the surprises of the tournament so far. They won 2-1 against Argentina in their first match and also held their own against Poland, creating 16 scoring opportunities and an Expected Goals Value of 2.66.

A win against Mexico in the last group match would definitely mean a place in the round of the last 16 for Saudi Arabia. In the event of a draw, the team would need support in the parallel match. However, oddly enough, that help could come from either team. If Poland beat Argentina, a draw would be enough for the Saudis, but even if Argentina win by a similar margin, Saudi Arabia could still move ahead of the Poles with a draw.

Especially at the beginning of the second half, Saudi Arabia put enormous pressure on Poland!

The Saudis were unlucky against Poland, missing a penalty by Salem Al-Dawsari and other good opportunities. The 2-0 win for the Poles was therefore flattering to some extent, although the Saudis also allowed the Poles a few more opportunities. The team around superstar Robert Lewandowski hit the post twice.

Saudi Arabia need to stabilize their defense before the game against the agile Mexicans, as their attack has been surprisingly strong so far.

Mexico World Cup 2022 Preview

The Mexicans have been particularly disappointing on the attack so far. In two games against Poland and Argentina, the team managed an Expected Goals Value of just 0.91. That is, of course, far too little to advance to the round of 16 – and Mexico did not score a single goal in the end. Against Argentina, they only managed a value of 0.09 xG.

Hardly any player stood out in a positive way against Argentina, and there was clearly too little quality coming off the bench. Even with a win over Saudi Arabia, Mexico would need help in the parallel match to advance. Ideally from Poland: If Michniewicz’s team beats the Argentines, Mexico would be through with a win. In the event of a draw or an Argentine victory, Mexico would need a fairly big win over Saudi Arabia.

Mexico were far too timid against Argentina for almost the entire duration of the match.

Of course, the Mexican team and its coach Gerardo Martino are also aware of the described circumstances. It is therefore to be expected that the Mexicans will make changes and be much more attacking than in the first games. Martino could do this, for example, by bringing in star striker Raúl Jiménez, who is not fully fit and was only substituted in the first two games.

Team comparison Saudi Arabia vs. Mexico

In favor of Saudi Arabia:

+ The team has created a number of scoring opportunities in both matches so far.
+ Theoretically, a draw would be enough for a place in the last 16
+ Despite the defeat against Poland, the Saudis should have more self-confidence than Mexico
+ Mexico’s attack has been too toothless so far and they haven’t scored a goal yet.
+ In addition, the Mexicans are under enormous pressure and have to attack with an open target.

In favor of Mexico:

+ A necessary, more attacking approach could provide more spectacle
+ Saudi Arabia allow many opportunities through their opponents

The last duel

So far, Saudi Arabia and Mexico have met five times and the Arabs have not won a single one.

The last match took place in 1999 as part of the Confederations Cup in Mexico City,. At that time, the Mexicans won clearly and convincingly with a score of 5-1. Only in the 0-0 draw in Créteil, France, a year earlier, did Saudi Arabia earn a point against Mexico.

Saudi Arabia – Mexico Over Under Prediction

Group C currently shows an upside-down football world. Whereas Mexico have been almost completely unthreatening, Saudi Arabia always created their opportunities and were very brave on the attack.

However, the circumstances before the final group matches implies that Mexico should win against Saudi Arabia and ideally score many goals. Mexico must therefore attack and take full risk, which should offer the Saudis opportunities in the transition game. We therefore expect a lively match with many goals and bet on an “Over 2.5”, i.e. at least three goals scored in the match.

Saudi Arabia – Mexico Prediction

Only a win matters for Mexico, Saudi Arabia could also settle for a draw if they get some help in the parallel match. But since two results have a simultaneous effect on the standings, something could change by the minute and require more attack from the Saudis.

We are betting here that Mexico can prevail because the team has more quality, but also more experience.
