South Korea World Cup 2022 Preview

It was maddening: South Korea showed great morale for long phases of the game in the 3-2 defeat against Ghana, but conceded the goals at the worst possible times. The decisive goal even came at a time when South Korea were putting the Ghanaians under heavy pressure. Even the long injury time did nothing to change South Korea’s first defeat in this tournament.

Overlyzer Live Trend South Korea vs. Ghana
South Korea were for the most part the better team against Ghana, shooting 22 times towards the opposition goal.

It is now obvious that the South Koreans desperately need a win against Portugal to get through the round of the last 16. In addition, they need relatively tricky help in the parallel match. Besides South Korea, Ghana and Uruguay can also still advance.

Nevertheless, the Koreans will have the most difficult task, also because Portugal’s team boss Fernando Santos is not expected to make many changes. Portugal is desperate to win the group to avoid a clash with Brazil in the round of the last 16.

Portugal World Cup 2022 Preview

With a largely commanding performance against Uruguay and a deserved 2-0 victory, Portugal already secured their promotion to the round of the last 16 on the second matchday. However, the first place is not yet guaranteed and Portugal could theoretically still be overtaken by Ghana. This is relatively unlikely, but must be taken into account.

Portugal will therefore be looking to pick up the necessary seventh point, or even a win, to face the runner-up from Group G – and therefore most likely not Brazil – in the round of the last 16.

Overlyzer Live Trends Portugal Uruguay
With the exception of the final stages, Portugal were practically always the better team against Uruguay.

Nevertheless, Fernando Santos will probably spare one or two players for the round of the last 16. In part, he will be forced to do so, as Danilo Pereira will continue to be absent due to a fractured rib and Otávio due to a muscle injury. Nevertheless, we will again see a strong squad on the Portuguese side.

Team comparison

In favor of South Korea:

+ Strong mentality
+ Tactical discipline
+ Portugal is already qualified and could spare some players

In favor of Portugal:

+ With promotion already secured, they can be a little more relaxed about the game.
+ Bruno Fernandes in particular is in impressive form
+ South Korea showed defensive weaknesses in their 3-2 defeat against Ghana
+ Significantly higher individual quality

The last duel

South Korea and Portugal have only met once before: at the 2002 World Cup, South Korea won 1-0 in the group stage in front of their own crowd.

This victory in the final group match, in which Ji-sung Park scored the decisive goal, enabled South Korea to clinch the group title and sensationally knock Portugal out of the tournament. For the Portuguese, who fielded stars like Luis Figo, Jorge Costa, Nuno Gomes and Joao Pinto, this was a bitter disappointment. However, Beto and Joao Pinto were both sent off before the decisive goal.

South Korea – Portugal Over Under Prediction

Portugal’s games so far have clearly had “over” potential, even if the win against Uruguay was ultimately an “under”. South Korea already produced one of the more spectacular 0-0 draws against Uruguay, and this finally led to a wild game with many goalscoring opportunities against Ghana.

Portugal simply have it in their DNA to attack, even if they are led by a rather defensive-minded coach in Fernando Santos. The South Koreans, on the other hand, absolutely have to win the game to have any chance of advancing and will therefore not use a wait-and-see approach.

We bet on an Over 2.5 for South Korea – Portugal, i.e. at least three goals scored in the match.

South Korea – Portugal Prediction

As you could already see in the first two games, the quality of the Portuguese is to be placed above all other teams in this group. There will be no huge team rotation for the European “Selecao”, especially as they cannot run the risk of losing first place in Group H.

So Portugal may not play with extreme vigour, but they will still be eager to win the game. We are therefore betting on another victory for the Portuguese, also because the South Koreans will have to open up spaces for their opponents sooner or later.

South Korea – Portugal Correct Score Bet

South Korea must score, Portugal will inevitably get scoring opportunities because South Korea must attack. It is therefore not unlikely that both teams will score goals.

Since we consider the Portuguese to be superior individually and as a team, our South Korea Portugal result tip is a 2-1 win for Portugal. After all, the Portuguese opponents have been able to build up a total Expected Goals value of 2.14 within two games, which suggests that the South Koreans will also get their opportunities…
