The Netherlands won Group A ahead of Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar with seven points. However, the Dutch did not really shine in any of their group games. On the other hand, they performed well against the USA in the round of 16. The U.S. boys created their opportunities but the Netherlands struck at the right times and won 3:1.

Argentina, however, have only been convincing to a limited extent so far in the tournament. Right at the start, they suffered an almost historic defeat against Saudi Arabia. After that, however, they were able to hold their own against Mexico and Poland and win Group C. In the round of 16, they faced Australia, and the bottom line was a 2-1 victory. Argentina was too inefficient on the counterattack and didn’t get the ball into the net, which is why the game was a nail-biter right to the end.

Netherlands World Cup Quarterfinals Preview

The Netherlands have not yet been able to really convince at the tournament so far. In the group stage, they struggled to overcome Senegal, played weakly in the 1-1 draw against Ecuador and finally defeated Qatar without a shine.

In the round of 16, the Dutch scored three goals for the first time, but the opponent from the United States had great opportunities to even turn the game, although “Oranje” was already 2-0 ahead at the break after goals from Memphis Depay and Daley Blind.

Denzel Dumfries scored the decisive 3:1 five minutes after Haji Wright’s USA goal, which earned him a kiss from his coach Louis van Gaal at the press conference.

The way the Netherlands performed against the USA was not “Dutch” at all. Normally the country is known for fast, dynamic attacking soccer, but this time they took an early lead and then surrendered the initiative to the USA. In the end, they had little possession and low passing accuracy, which also came down to directness in transition play.

So the Netherlands didn’t look for control, but much more for quick, direct counterattacks to exploit the USA’s defensive weaknesses. This was quite a risky concept, which was also shown by the Expected Goals statistic: In the end, the score was 1.57 : 2.25 against the Dutch.

Argentina World Cup Quarterfinals Preview

Argentina quickly bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia on the first matchday of the group stage and remained flawless thereafter. Three wins from their last three games speak for themselves, and they put in a very strong performance against the Poles in particular.

However, the team around its superstar Lionel Messi has still not shown itself to be playing like truly world champions. This is mainly due to the lack of efficiency in the offensive, which was particularly visible in the final phase of the round of 16 match against Australia.

The “Gauchos” could have added a goal or two in stoppage time, but repeatedly failed to do so. As a result, even the blatant underdogs from Australia still had chances to turn the game around completely.

The Netherlands will be the first real test for Argentina. Lionel Scaloni’s team has not yet had to play against a top team in the World Cup so far. Lionel Messi’s unpredictability is a big plus for the two-time world champions.

The average height difference per player in the expected lineups gives an advantage of over eight centimeters in favor of the Dutch (185.6cm vs. 177.4cm). The last duel

The Netherlands and Argentina have met a total of nine times. In fact, the upcoming quarterfinal will be the sixth time these two countries have met in a World Cup. Argentina have never beaten the Netherlands after 90 minutes!

However, the Argentines won the last encounter on their way to the World Cup final after a penalty shootout.
