Switzerland presented itself quite strong in Group G, defeating Cameroon 1-0 on the first matchday and then losing 1-0 to Brazil only after conceding a late goal. In the decisive match, Serbia was defeated 3-2 after a tough fight and thus sent home.

The match will take place on Tuesday, December 6 at 10 p.m. Qatar time at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail.

Portugal World Cup 2022 Preview

Portugal performed well at the start of the tournament and there are some promising aspects to the European “Selecao”, but Fernando Santos’ team also has its problems.

Most impressive so far have been the performances of Bruno Fernandes, who has traditionally played very strongly in the Portuguese team, while at Manchester United he is often criticized for his fluctuating performances.

Curiously, the team’s biggest star has been its weakest player so far. Cristiano Ronaldo has barely been able to make an impact so far in this World Cup and is already receiving plenty of criticism from the media and fans in his native Portugal. The soon-to-be 38-year-old superstar is currently completely lacking the punch of his old days.

The 2-1 loss to South Korea on the final day of Group G also brought criticism for the Portuguese, who were however fielding a reserve team.

Portugal will have to do without several players in the round of 16 against Switzerland. The most painful is the absence of Nuno Mendes, who will be out for the entire tournament due to a muscle injury. Danilo Pereira, a fellow PSG player, is out due to a fractured rib. Also questionable is Porto’s Otávio, who currently has muscle problems as well.

Against Switzerland, it is not unlikely that team boss Fernando Santos will start with his former star Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench and use him as a joker. Ronaldo has brought little spirit to the Portuguese game from the start.

Switzerland World Cup 2022 Preview

Switzerland’s team manager Murat Yakin recently attracted attention in an interview when he declared that the current Swiss national team is probably the best of all time. However, the coach could well be right, because Switzerland have so far presented themselves as extremely stable.

Against Serbia, the Swiss were the better and, above all, clearly more mature team. The 3-2 victory was highly deserved and in the end also relatively impressive, because the Swiss showed great confidence in their game, while the Serbians were already running out of steam.

Switzerland presented itself against Serbia as a fitter, technically better, but above all more intelligent team!

This cleverness could also be the key to success for the Swiss in their difficult round of 16 match against Portugal. It is not surprising that the Swiss are considered to have a good chance of keeping up in this match as well. After all, the Swiss have always been the best-performing German-speaking country at the last three major events.

Team boss Yakin hopes to be able to call on the two key defensive players Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi again in the round of 16. Both were absent against Serbia due to colds.

Team comparison

In favor of Portugal:

+ The exceptionally strong form of Bruno Fernandes
+ Extremely strong in the air

+ Secure defense that allows few clear scoring opportunities from their opponents
+ Sommer and Elvedi could return to the team
+ Several absences for Portugal

The last duel

Portugal and Switzerland last met in the UEFA Nations League. Both matches took place in June this year.

In Portugal, the Portuguese side prevailed 4-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a brace and William Carvalho and Joao Cancelo, who has also been strong in the World Cup so far, each adding a goal.

In the second leg in Geneva, however, Switzerland won 1-0 with a header from Haris Seferovic after just one minute, with the Portuguese squad rotating heavily, especially in attack and central midfield, leaving Bernardo Silva and Diogo Jota, for example, only on the bench. Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix were not even in Portugal’s squad.

Potential opponents for the quarterfinals

The winner of the duel between Portugal and Switzerland will meet the winner of the round of 16 match between Morocco and Spain in the quarterfinals.

Portugal – Switzerland Over Under Prediction

Both teams have had “over” and “under” games in the World Cup so far. The Swiss only proved that their offense is in good shape in their last game against Serbia, partly due to the return of Xherdan Shaqiri, but also because Serbia allowed too much.

The Portuguese also allowed too many scoring opportunities from their opponents in their previous matches, which is why they will be a bit more cautious against the clever Swiss.

Therefore, but also due to the nature of the knockout phase at a major event, we assume that no more than two goals will be scored in regular time and therefore bet on an “Under 2.5”.

Portugal – Switzerland Prediction

Portugal and Switzerland could be a game of equal strength, despite the individual advantages for the Portuguese.

The Swiss already showed against Brazil that they can hold their own against much stronger opponents. In this case only defensively, but nevertheless quite impressively. Against Serbia, the Swiss showed that they can be clearly superior against teams ranking in the “third tier”.

The Swiss are therefore quite capable of putting up quite a fight against Portugal. Moreover, the physical condition of the Swiss team is also very convincing. Therefore, we bet that the round of 16 duel between Portugal and Switzerland will go into overtime.

Portugal – Switzerland Correct Score Bet

Both teams have strong offensive lines, although the Portuguese are naturally more versatile and have a broader range of players. The only thing that Portugal always lacked was efficiency, partly because Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the shape that was hoped for before the tournament.

However, the Swiss are also extremely secure in defense and with Sommer and Elvedi, two important players could return who were absent due to illness recently.

Our Portugal Switzerland result tip is a 1-1 and thus extra time, in which we give the Swiss a good chance of advancing to the quarterfinals due to their great stamina, which could already be seen in the match against Serbia.
